Salt has always been an important commodity. Wars were once fought over salt, it was an important item for trade and was once used as payment. The ancient art of gathering salt from the ocean is still practiced around the world.
On the island of Kauai near the town of Hanapepe salt farming is still practiced the way it has been for generations. Rights to process the salt are handed down each generation and sometimes families can be seen working their salt beds, preserving this great piece of Hawaiian culture. The salt patch is made out of 17 different families. Each family has their own section within the patch. You must stay within the area assigned to you as this area was passed down from generation to generation. You are not allowed to farm salt in someone else’s area without permission from the Hui nor can you start your own section without permission.
In France the salt ponds around Brittany have been cultivated for centuries and from this we get Celtic Sea Salt. One of the most widely know natural sea salt brands which has been doctor recommended since 1976. Celtic sea salt is rich in minerals especially magnesium, calcium, zinc and iron.
Some salt is mined as in the case of Himalayan salt which is mined from a depth of 5,000 feet. This salt has become extremely popular over the past 10 years and rightly so. It is a tremendously 'tasty' salt mined from salt veins over 200 million years old. Himalayan salt is rich in trace minerals containing 80+ different minerals. It has been kept pure due to its location and ancient origin.
