DIY Toothpaste
Oral health is vital to overall health, as mentioned in a previous blog post. The oral cavity is very permeable this is why sub-lingual supplements enter the blood stream rather quickly. The easy of absorption of the mouth is the main reason why we need to choose a healthy toothpaste. It is a product most people buy but did you know it is rather easy to make yourself?
One of the main reasons to make our own toothpaste is because you will know what is in it. Many store bought brands contain chemicals and additives that are not necessary for oral health. The list includes sodium lauryl sulfates (SLS), artificial flavorings and colorings, parabens, glycerin, and more. It seems there will always be a debate on the risks/benefits of adding fluoride to toothpaste. For some people this is a big issue for others not.
The one most simple recipe I like for homemade toothpaste has 3 ingredients:
-Coconut Oil
-Baking Soda
-Essential Oil
Simply combine 7 tablespoons of both the coconut oil and baking soda, then add the essential oil of your choice. Mix all ingredients in a small bowl, mix them well, and store in jar and use as needed.
As for essential oils this is a preference thing, oils to consider are peppermint, cinnamon, lemon, clove or tea tree. You can add from 5 to 25 drops of essential oil to the paste, play around and find what works best for you. To this basic recipe you can also add sea salt as a simple yet effective cleansing agent.
Toothpaste is such a staple ingredient and making your own can be an empowering and healthy choice for yourself and the planet. The plastic tubes used to hold your toothpaste are not recyclable in every region of the country and toothbrushes are not easily recyclable.
