Tips for Staying Healthy this Winter

What better way to kick off 2015 than with a resolution to make a positive change to your diet and/or lifestyle this year. Perhaps you would like to cut a certain food out of your diet or try to eat more nutritious foods? Perhaps you would like to devise a regular exercise routine that you know you will stick to or commit to shopping at local food outlets?

Boost your diet

As viruses are more commonly contracted in the winter, it’s important to make sure that your immune system is in top-notch condition. Food is one of the most powerful tools we have to maintain a healthy immune system and prevent disease.
“Every bite you take is either fighting disease or feeding it.” - Heather Morgan.
To strengthen the immune system, we recommend eating an abundance of foods such as oranges, bell peppers and broccoli that are high in Vitamin C. Other foods such as garlic will prevent the body from infections, while ginger has antimicrobial properties. Consider adding these to your meals when possible.

Winter vegetables such as turnips, parsnips, leeks, sweet potatoes and winter squash can be roasted, mashed or made into soup for a comforting winter meal.

Berries are one food that help promote healthy tissues and organs with their high Vitamin C content and goji berries support the immune system particularly well. This versatile berry can be snacked on, added to smoothies or trail mixes and can be made into a tea. Exercise regularly

Don’t be afraid to get out and exercise during the winter. Whether it’s hopping on your treadmill, going to the gym for a workout or bundling up and going for a stroll outside, regular exercise will help you feel good during this mellow time of year.

Research has shown that engaging in a moderate level of exercise regularly has a long-term cumulative effect on immune response.

Sleep well

Our body naturally tells us to hibernate in the winter. We require more sleep during this season because of the longer nights. The average adult sleeps less than seven hours per night, according to the National Institutes of Health. Six or seven hours sounds pretty good in today’s fast-paced society, however it is a recipe for chronic sleep deprivation. To help eliminate your sleep debt, make sleep a priority. Drinking a cup of Camomile tea before bed time will help relax you.

We are looking forward to helping you achieve whatever health-related goals you have this year. We promise you many more informative blog posts and hope that we inspire a healthy change in your lifestyle. If you have found something works well for you, the best thing you can do is pay it forward, so that others too can reap the benefits.
