Zero-Waste Store Revolutionises Future Of Grocery Shopping

Lyndsey and Jesse Manderson, a Denver husband and wife team, have released plans to open Zero Market, a zero-waste grocery store and we think this is so great.

The new business initiative will be a one-stop shop for food, cosmetics and cleaning and household products. Green shoppers will conveniently be able to access everything they need by visiting this one location. But what differs between this grocery store and your Whole Foods or Safeway is the lack of packaging.

Zero Market will offer a wide variety of products. The store will carry alternatives to conventional grocery store products and includes bamboo tooth brushes instead of plastic (similar to the ones we offer), laundry soap alternatives such as soap nuts, and toilet paper wrapped in paper instead of plastic. Customers are encouraged to bring in their own reusable containers to fill and prices are determined by weight. Glass and stainless containers will also be available for purchase.

Lyndsey and Jesse are taking the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle to another level. In addition to this, they encourage people to refuse to buy what you can live without and rot; which is referring to the issue of rotting compost in landfill, which is one of the biggest contributors of the greenhouse gas, methane. In fact, 18 per cent of what is dumped in landfill in the U.S. is food.

The toxicity of plastics to our body and the earth is becoming more apparent. Since 1950 there has been 6 billion metric tonnes of plastic produced. This non-biodegradable material is threatening thousands of species, that come into contact with it on land and in our oceans, rivers and lakes.

250 million tonnes of trash is created every year and only 30 per cent of trash in the world is recycled. That means 175 million tonnes going into landfills and oceans and 30 per cent of this comes from packaging and containers.

The idea for Zero Market was inspired by The Clean Bin Project documentary and it became Lyndsey and Jesse’s mission to revolutionise the future of shopping. Without having to travel to a dozen different stores in town to seek out products free of packaging, their one-stop stop will bring convenience and comfort into their lives and hopefully the lives of many.

Zero Market will offer produce from local Denver metro area farms to encourage seasonal eating. It will also include a fresh juice and smoothie bar with food and sandwiches.

The store will open in early 2015.
