Tai chi is a traditional Chinese martial art that is often described as ‘meditation in motion.’ It involves pausing through a series of low-impact, slow-motion exercises. Deep breathing and gentle, un-forced movements are executed.

Tai chi has roots in philosophy and it is said to unblock and encourage a consistent free-flowing of the qi energy force through the body, while also promoting the balance of yin and yang elements that make up the universe and should be kept in harmony.

Anti-wrinkle creams, radical diets and plastic surgery are all common approaches taken to combat the natural signs of aging but what about tai chi?

A new study undertaken in China that was published in the journal, Cell Transplantation, suggests that tai chi may replenish stem cells.

A year-long study conducted compared the effects of tai chi and brisk walking in young volunteers, that were divided into the two groups. Results revealed that tai chi participants saw an increase in a stem cell count that is important for normal functioning of the body.

Tai Chi is recommended by the authors of the study for patients with mild to moderate Parkison’s disease and fibromyalgia. Other possible benefits include pain reduction, fall presentation, balance improvement and stress reduction.

According to Paul R. Sanberg, Ph.D and professor at the University of South Florida, USA, “This study provides the first step into providing scientific evidence for the possible health benefits of tai chi” as cited by Psych Central.

Harvard Medical School’s publication outlines the medical conditions that tai chi can help with, including arthritis, low bone density, breast cancer, heart disease, heart failure, hypertension, sleep problems, stroke and Parkison’s disease. You can read more -here-
