Are We a Nation in Pain?

Are We a Nation in Pain?

Posted by Zebra Organics on 2019 Feb 6th

The citizens of the United States of America are the largest consumers of pain "medication" in the world. This truly shocked me, considering we are not nearly half the world's population. And it got me wondering about pain not large all consuming pain but the little pains we deal with every day. The little pains that have been with us for years, the little aches and pains we just deal with. What if you knew about a natural pain relieving anti-inflammatory herb with thousands of years of use, would you consider adding it to your diet?

Rasayana An Herb for Enlightenment?
The citizens of India have a system of medicine called Vedic medicine also known as Ayuvedic, meaning the "science of life". Within this system there is yoga, pranyama, meditation and herbs. And among the wealth of herbs from India, one stands out above the rest, it is known as "The Queen of Herbs" and her name is Tulsi or Holy Basil. A “rasayana,”is an herb that nourishes a person’s growth to perfect health and enlightenment. Do you think you can benefit from such a treasured herb?

Introducing Tulsi:
Truly a great herb Tulsi translates to the "Incomparable One" and it has been revered by physicians, yogis, mystics and citizens of India for thousands of years. Vedic medicine has recognized Tulsi for its physical benefits as well as its 'spiritual' benefits. Tulsi contains natural anti-inflammatory compounds and is a known COX-2 inhibitor. Tulsi has been revered for its ability to calm the mind and emotions; and it is said consuming tulsi on a regular basis would lead to enlightenment. High honors for a plant from the basil family. Enlightenment aside, Tulsi is an amazing herb with a wide range of benefits, from reducing cortisol levels, inflammation and blood sugar levels to supporting stamina.

Calming and Balancing:
The peoples of Indian revere Tulsi for its spiritual nature; in India it is known as "Queen of Herbs" and it is often planted in front of homes throughout India. Tulsi is an adaptogen, meaning it helps the body adapt especially to stress and immune system challenges. Adaptogens are a powerful class of herbs that help to regulate many processes, they help the body 'adapt' hence the name.

Antioxidant Potential:
The essential oils in the leaves of Tulsi are a source of many phytochemicals and it is these compounds which make Tulsi such a wonderful herb. They also helps tulsi to rank high in the world of safe all natural anti oxidant herbs.

Hidden Injuries:
How many people are walking around with what I call 'hidden injuries', that dull ache in back, shoulder, leg or neck? By looking at people it is hard to tell who is in pain, yet how many of us go around seemingly normal but in a state of constant pain? The pernicious nature of this pain makes it even more challenging and demanding of attention and awareness. When we shoulder on with pain of this nature we give it a chance to establish a strong foothold. Because of its chronic nature we need to take steady steps to chip away at it.

Addressing Chronic Pain:
Improving the diet, adding more green foods, staying properly hydrated and using anti-inflammatory herbs like Tulsi are great ways to dissolve chronic aches and pains. As part of a healthy diet and lifestyle Tulsi can add to your general feeling of well being. Tulsi is a great herb to use when you are making the gradual improvements needed to reduce chronic aches and pains.

Cortisol Reducing:
The phytochemical compounds in the leaves of Holy Basil help to reduce cortisol levels in the body. Cortisol is known as the 'stress hormone' is it related to the fight or flight mechanism and is triggered by stress, caffeine and negative emotions. This hormone when left unchecked can ruin the quality of our day to day life, because when it is circulating in our blood stream we feel on edge, agitated and it interrupts healthy sleep patterns.

These are only some of the benefits of Tulsi, I will be posting more about this truly great herb in the weeks to come.
