Yogurt is a great source of calcium, probiotics and protein. Protein-rich foods are satisfying, as they keep you full for a longer period of time. Yogurt has a low glycemic index (GI), which means the sugar is absorbed into your blood stream slower than high GI foods. This helps your body burn fat most efficiently and it works to stabilise your energy levels.

New research has found that including yogurt in your diet can help decrease the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

Information was collected from more than 170,000 participants that completed three different health surveys. Published in BMC Medicine, the study revealed that overall, dairy consumption did not influence the rates of Type 2 diabetes. When looking at different dairy products in isolation, from milk and cheese to whole milk and yogurt, researchers found that consuming 28g of yogurt per day lowered the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by 18 per cent.

Are you at risk of Type 2 Diabetes?

Unlike Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes is often preventable. These factors will increase your likelihood of contracting Type 2 diabetes: obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, older age, genetics and race or ethnicity.

There are long-term health problems associated with Type 2 Diabetes and death in the most extreme case. Diabetes increases your risk of conditions such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, high blood pressure, nervous system damage, eye disease and more.
